Tumacácori National Historical Park (NHP) is located in Southern Arizona, USA, just 30 minutes North of the United States and Mexican border. It is home to many different cultures including the Tohono O’odham and Latinx population. Southern Arizona experiences extreme weather such as cold winters, blazing hot summers that are followed by the Monsoon season. The park also was holding its 50th year as a National Park. This called for a special approach towards the Fiesta posters. By making a series of posters, people could collect each poster as a novelty item. The four posters highlight the main elements of the festival: food, music, folklórico, and tribal dancing.
Southern Arizona is home to a diverse population of plants and animals. The Santa Cruz river runs through the park which increased its biodiversity. Bats are a common animal that lives in Arizona. They have very delicate sleep habits, and disrupting their sleep can harm the bats. In order to protect the bats, certain areas had to be closed off from the public. The challenge was to create a sign that worked both as an explanation for the area closure and an educational opportunity for the public.
The new designs used bright colors and clean graphcis to attract the younger population. Including the Spanish translation is crucial to making information and events accessible to the community as a majority of the population spoke Spanish.Visual Memory is a display typeface.
