Horsehill Vineyards is a collaborative project between Cal Poly Pomona and South Coast Winery. Grapes are grown and harvested by students of the College of Agriculture, the label and packaging are designed by the students of the College of Environmental Design, and finally the wine is marketed and poured by our very own Hospitality and Management students. When the wine is ready to be bottled, a new design is created for that particular wine. The whole process involved many steps, from doing individual research, team research, sketching, meeting with the client, and endless rounds of feedback. The main concern of the client was that they wanted the new design to pop against competitors on the shelf. To address this, the team created a colorful and engaging design to capture the audience. Team members individually performed SKU audits and collected 1,000 images for reference, and afterward research was done regarding certain topics of wine and the wine-making process. Topics such as regional wines, flavor profiling, grape harvesting, wine history in California, the Prohibition, and much more were discussed during the inital phase. One of the topics discussed was the history of the Horsehill Vineyards wine and its brand identity. The team wanted to fully embrace the Learn by Doing philosophy of Cal Poly Pomona that is brilliantly displayed through the Horsehill Vineyards project.
